Sunshine Coast pollen count today and forecast

Friday 2 October: grass pollen in Sunshine Coast is Low (modelled estimate). Little pasture upwind today, so most grass pollen is local (parks, lawns, roadsides), on a ENE wind of 8 km/h. Saturday: Low. Sunday: Low.

Updated from the ECMWF forecast run of 2 Oct, 04:00 pm AEST. Modelled estimate, not an official count: there is no official public pollen count for Sunshine Coast. Model, unvalidated: our own subtropical grass model, not yet checked against local counts (how it works).

Where Sunshine Coast's grass pollen comes from

Subtropical grasses (Bahia grass, Paspalum, Rhodes grass, couch) flower from October into autumn, with several peaks that follow summer rain, so the season is long rather than sharp. Our estimate for Sunshine Coast follows the grazing land inland of the city: it was drier than usual about 38 days ago (grass flowers some weeks after it greens), and 13 mm of rain fell two to four weeks ago. Sea breezes blow cleaner air in from the ocean, so onshore days read lower here than inland. This model is our own and has not been checked against local counts (the subtropical pollen season). On the map, particles leave pasture cells (ABARES land use) and ride today's forecast wind. Their number follows today's modelled level, so a dense stream means a high day.
