Allergy in Singapore
Singapore has no pollen season in the European sense: it is warm and humid all year, and the allergen that matters most is indoors. In a study of Singapore-born adults, 70 to 80 percent of those with measurable allergy antibodies reacted to house dust mites, mainly Blomia tropicalis and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, which thrive in the island's constant humidity. The outdoor threat is haze: smoke from peat and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, usually carried in between June and October by the southwest monsoon. On 21 June 2013 the 3-hour PSI reached 401, the highest ever recorded in Singapore.
Haze and dust mites add up: smoke particles irritate airways that a dust mite allergy has already inflamed, and asthma and allergic rhinitis flare in haze episodes. Read haze and dust mite allergy for what helps.
