Haze and allergy in Miri

Miri, in northern Sarawak near the border with Brunei, is surrounded by large peat swamps. In long dry spells peat fires close to the city, such as those around Kuala Baram, can cover Miri in smoke even when there is little transboundary haze, and peat fires are hard to put out because they smoulder underground. In the worst years Miri is also reached by smoke from Kalimantan. The northeast monsoon from November to March brings the heaviest rain and the cleanest air of the year.
