Kuching haze and air quality today

Friday 9 October: the CAMS global model forecasts a daily mean of 27.8 µg/m³ PM2.5 for Kuching today, above the WHO 24-hour guideline of 15 µg/m³; the highest of the next days is 31.7 µg/m³. These are model values. SkyPollen does not yet have a pollen level for Kuching: no pollen forecast exists for Malaysia. For the official air pollutant index (API) see APIMS (Department of Environment Malaysia, live air pollutant index).

Haze and allergy in Kuching

Kuching, the capital of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, is the closest of these cities to the peatlands of Kalimantan, where the worst fires of the region burn in dry El Nino years. In September 1997 Kuching's air pollutant index reached 839 and Sarawak declared a state of emergency, one of the worst haze episodes ever recorded anywhere. In ordinary years the city's heavy rainfall keeps the air clean for most of the year, and the haze risk is concentrated in the dry weeks from August to October.
