Haze and allergy in Ipoh

Ipoh, the capital of Perak, sits in the Kinta Valley among steep limestone hills, with the Titiwangsa range to the east and the lower Keledang hills to the west. On still mornings the valley can hold smoke and haze close to the ground until the day warms up. The limestone around Ipoh is also quarried for cement and stone, a local source of dust. Transboundary haze reaches Ipoh mostly between June and October, when the southwest monsoon carries smoke from fires in Sumatra across the Strait of Malacca.
