Kuantan haze today: air quality and PM2.5 forecast

Friday 9 October: the CAMS global model forecasts a daily mean of 56.6 µg/m³ PM2.5 for Kuantan today, above the WHO 24-hour guideline of 15 µg/m³; the highest of the next days is 56.6 µg/m³. These are model values. For the official Air Pollutant Index (API) see APIMS (Department of Environment Malaysia, live Air Pollutant Index, API). SkyPollen does not yet have a pollen level for Kuantan: no pollen forecast exists for Malaysia.

Haze and allergy in Kuantan

Kuantan, the capital of Pahang, is on the east coast facing the South China Sea, on the far side of the Titiwangsa range from the Strait of Malacca, so transboundary haze usually reaches it later and thinner than the west coast. From November to March the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain that keeps the air clean. Kuantan has had its own dust problem too: in 2015 and early 2016 red dust from bauxite mining and stockpiles coloured roads, rivers and the sea around the city, and a moratorium on bauxite mining was imposed in January 2016.
